Insurance
The third party liability insurance of our rental partners provides coverage of at least EUR 1 million. The coverage depends on the local statutory requirements and relates to personal injury and property damage. (Details can be provided on request). The collision damage waiver (CDW) covers damage caused by the driver or damage which is not covered by a third party or reduces the nonwaiverable responsibility depending on the country. In case of damage, this nonwaiverable responsibility is retained from the hirer locally in the form of the deposit. In case of damage, the following instruction must be followed:
- immediately inform the rental station
- call the police and obtain an accident report
- when you return the vehicle, complete and sign a damage report.
To reclaim any retained/paid non-waiverable responsibility with a DEW, please send the following documents to Sixt Holiday Cars:
- the damage report and the police accident report
- copy of the rental contract
- proof of payment confirming that the excess has been paid (credit card statement)
The excess will not be reimbursed in the following cases:
- damage incurred due to failure to comply with the rental conditions
- damage incurred due to driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication
- loss of or damage to the car keys
- damage to the undercarriage and oil sump as well as wheels, glass and roof and interior of the car
- private objects that are stolen from the vehicle or damaged
- subsequent costs such as towing costs, hotel accommodation, phone costs etc.
The customer shall always be liable for damage caused by negligence or driving on unpaved roads. Reimbursement shall be denied when the local insurance does not settle the damage, in case of all negligence. The car theft protection only covers theft of the vehicle and not the objects inside it.
Additional insurance
You have the option locally of taking out additional insurance, e.g. personal accident insurance (PAI). This is charged for according to the terms of the relevant car rental company. This is not mandatory, Sixt Holiday Cars will not refund any insurance taken out locally.
Damage excess waiver (DEW)
On all bookings you will be required to leave minimum a deposit to the value of any CDW excess you may be required to pay if the vehicle is damaged during your hire (see the paragraphs dealing with CDW above). If the vehicle is damaged, the deposit will be retained and treated as payment of the excess. If, however, you have purchased our damage excess waiver, your liability to pay the excess will be waived and you may reclaim it, subject to our terms and conditions, by filling in an accident report form (supplied by our local car rental partner) and sending a copy of it to Sixt Holiday Cars. Your liability to pay for damage to the vehicle will therefore be limited to the cost of the daily rate you pay for collision damage waiver and damage excess waiver.
- DEW is not available for prestige cars.
- DEW (and CDW) do not apply in relation to damage to windows/windscreens, wheels and tyres, the underside and the roof and the interior of the car, towing charges or where the vehicle is driven off-road or on unpaved roads, without due care and attention, negligently or where the driver is under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Your liability to pay the cost of the damage will therefore not be waived in these circumstances and you may be liable for the full cost.
- In the event that keys are lost or damaged, you will be liable for the reasonable costs of obtaining a replacement, and further costs if directly related to the theft of the car.
- DEW does not apply when taking four-wheel drive vehicles "off road" or on unpaved roads. Your liability to pay the CDW excess will therefore not be waived in these circumstances and you may be liable for the full excess.
